Biosecurity New Zealand is seeking nominations for a Community Member to join the Tiakina Kauri Governance Group, providing strategic oversight of the national programme to protect Kauri and implement the National PA Pest Management Plan (NPMP).

Tiakina Kauri are a management agency housed within Biosecurity New Zealand which works in partnership with mana whenua and in collaboration with the Department of Conservation, Northland Regional Council, Auckland Council, Waikato Regional Council and Bay of Plenty Regional Council. We are tasked with leading the implementation of the NPMP to help protect Kauri from the pathogen Phytophthora agathidicida (PA).

Tiakina Kauri has a structure that is governed equally by Māori and the Crown and the role of the Governance Group is to provide strategic oversight and leadership for Tiakina Kauri and the wider national programme of work.

This is a unique opportunity to ensure community perspectives help shape decisions that protect Kauri forests and the cultural, environmental, and economic values they support. 

Nominations must be received by 24 July 2026.

Who we’re looking for 

We are seeking individuals who bring a mix of the following: 

  • Has strong networks, links to community groups and organisations
  • Governance or board-level experience 
  • Strong understanding of environmental management, biosecurity, or conservation
  • Experience working in partnership with iwi and Māori organisations 

Appointments 

The Governance Group comprises eight members, including:

  • Four members nominated by iwi/hapū of Kauri lands
  • Representatives from the Department of Conservation, regional councils, and the science system
  • One Community Member 

 

The Community Member is appointed by the Deputy Director-General, Biosecurity New Zealand. 

Role of the Governance Group 

The Tiakina Kauri Governance Group provides leadership and strategic oversight for the programme by:

  • Setting strategic direction and priorities 
  • Monitoring programme performance and outcomes
  • Supporting effective partnerships with iwi, hapū, and stakeholders
  • Ensuring strong stewardship of funding and resources
  • Upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations and principles 

Term and Commitment 

  • Appointment is for an initial 12-month term with an extension to three years.
