Working around Kauri?
You can protect Kauri, and ensure you are compliant with the rules of the National Plan, by following our best practice guidance when you are working around Kauri.

About Kauri
Kauri are a taonga (treasure) of Aotearoa, New Zealand, and the third largest conifer in the world. Māori see the health of Kauri as an indicator of the wellbeing of the ngahere (forest) and the people.
Kauri are threatened by a soil-borne pathogen called Phytophthora agathidicida (PA), which causes the fatal condition known as kauri dieback disease.
To preserve Kauri for generations to come, 10 rules have been introduced as part of a National Plan to protect Kauri from the PA pathogen. Some of these rules apply when working around Kauri.
Civil works around Kauri
Carrying out civil construction works around Kauri, such as land clearing, earthworks, or roading, can risk introducing or spreading the PA pathogen via the movement or disturbance of soil, gravel and fill.
Download the Contractor flyer to learn how to carry out civil construction works safely around Kauri and ensure you comply with the rules of the National Plan.
Forestry operations around Kauri
During forestry operations in Kauri forests and Kauri Hygiene Zones, the movement of soil by vehicles and people carries a risk of spreading or introducing the PA pathogen.
Download the Forestry flyer to learn how to harvest safely around Kauri and ensure your forestry operations comply with the rules of the National Plan.
The New Zealand Forest Owners Association has also developed a comprehensive guide to protecting Kauri during forestry operations. Visit www.nzfoa.org.nz
How do the National Plan rules work?
Tiakina Kauri is helping people and organisations to understand and comply with the rules of the National Plan through education and awareness programmes.
In cases of continued non-compliance with the rules, you may be subject to prosecution.
